I've tried AVG free 8.0 but i think its incompatible.
Download Spybot , download Defender, restart computer, then run Spybot.
Virus Protection-- 2 programs of virus protection will conflict with each other and will actually cancel out the protection. I suggest Avast since you do not like AVG.
Running Spybot and Defender, with EITHER Avast or Avg (great Free virus protection
programs ) will keep a computer in good working condition.
Windows Defender and Spybot are 2 really good Spyware Programs.

Actually, there are just 4 AV's that are really free:
1. Avast Home Edition
2. AVG Free Edition
3. Comodo
4. Avira Classic
Others either lack real-time protection and are pretty useless in terms of PC protection, or have mediocre performace.
BUT, antivirus alone is not enough. A good antispyware and girewall are must have as well.
I recommend that you use the antivirus software you can solve the problem.

AVG is def your best bet. and just checked the avg site, it says it is compatible with Vista and XP.
